Proverbs 19 . . .

20 Listen to advice and accept instruction,
and in the end you will be wise.
21 Many are the plans in a man's heart,

but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.

3 A man's own folly ruins his life,
yet his heart rages against the LORD.

I think this is a great picture of what all men do. We make dumb descisions all the time, then blame God for the things that go wrong in our lives. This is the duplicity of the human condition. Its hard to imagine that we are this stupid some times, but it is the truth!

8 He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who cherishes understanding prospers.

I think it is interesting that we tend to think that we are loving ourselves by doing whatever we want, when in reality, we are to know what's best for ourselves when we desire to gain wisdom.

Proverbs 19:21

Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails.

This Proverb really hits on what lecture 13 is talking about. It's not my plans but Gods. If we trust in God his plans will always guide us in life.

10 It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury—
how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!

I'm not entirely sure what this means. I understand that is unfitting for the fool to be rich, but why is it bad for a slave to rule over princes. I could see princes and slaves being equal. I guess it needs to be taken into context. Slavery was OK back then, everyone had a class.

23 The fear of the Lord leads to life.
and whoever has it is satisfied;
he will not be visited by harm

i was listening to the radio today and there was a song playing from Point of Grace (i think) but a main line in the song was "I want a fearless life" or something to that effect. though i am sure they are referring to a different fear that the Bible speaks of, i would love to have a fearful life, one where i am awestruck in who God is and that transpires into a life pleasing to him.

Proverbs 19:25 Strike a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence; reprove a man of understanding, and he will gain knowledge.

Even though the Lord blesses us with wisdom and knowledge, we should still be willing to learn from everything and anything. Of course we are to veiw everything through the window of the Word of God, but we must understand that our journey of learning never ceases.

a hot tempered man is clearly warned against in many passages... my family is naturally hot tempered so gaurding against this is difficult, but well worth it.

ASHLEY"S COMMENTS: reprove a man of understanding, and he will gain knowledge. the end of the verse says that a man of understanding will take what a person says and learn from it. I need to take what people say and learn from it and not always be upset.

Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.

This has been and will probally be a very hard lesson for me to learn. I really do want to listen but my foolish pride getis in the way. I foolishly think that I am the exception to this rule or it doesn't apply to me, but I am wrong. These rules do apply to me what those teachers, elders, friends and the scripture have told me all come true.
