Genuine Worship

The illustration for today is an artist's rendition of Noah's sacrifice when leaving the Ark (Genesis 8). Sacrifices were central to the process of formal worship in the OT. They were offered as acts of worship and as appeasements for the sins of the giver to God. And while a faithful OT saint was diligent in offering the right type of sacrifice for the occasion, the Proverbs are full of reminders to them (and us) that God is far more interested in right behavior and attitudes than just the right ritualistic sacrifice.

Obedience is good, but genuine obedience is best.

Proverbs 21:3 - To do what is right and just
is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

Proverbs 21:27 - The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable—
how much more so when brought with evil intent!
