WISDOM PROJECT: For this month, I will supply links to both the NIV and ESV versions of the chapter each day (Feb. 1 = Proverbs 1, etc.) in the post—both of which contain the audio.

And in the month of February a unique feature for the WP will be Commentaries on selected passages/verses from within the chapter for the day. And for the most part, these comments will be from links in the Online Bible Study Resources feature here on the 3 John 8 blog (scroll down in the column to the right to find the links).

Note to Proverbs class participants: this is the place where you should post your application comments for the Daily Proverbs Reading Assignment.

Starting in verse 1 the writer issues a warning to be cautious. One is to do their very best each day with whatever they have to do. There is no guarantee that tomorrow will come; only God knows. Besides, there is enough waiting out in tomorrow for us (Matt 6:34b), that by giving our all today we will honor God. It is the slothful sluggard who chooses to wait, and to put off, and to be lazy (Prov 24:33-34). Let our choice of being busy about the Father’s business continue to develop a life-style of wisdom seeking, Christ-following obedience.

The first two verses really stuck with me this morning. This whole year I've been really praying for humility and trying to learn so much about it and how that plays into God's love for us and my love for Him. These two verses were an incredible reminder to me of the importance for humility (1) by submitting to God's sovereign plan and (2) in thinking of others and not ourselves.

Proverbs 27 . . .

5 - Better is open rebuke
than hidden love.

6 - Wounds from a friend can be trusted,
but an enemy multiplies kisses.

17 -As iron sharpens iron,
so one man sharpens another.

This is an important principle of friendship. If a friend is a true friend he or she will tell you the truth even if it causes temporary pain. This is difficult but sometimes that is the only way that our friendships can grow in Christ.

15 A quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping on a rainy day;
16 restraining her is like raining the wind or grasping oil with the hand.

Before I start, let me say I am sure this translates for both sexes ladies. I do not have this wife, but I have one of these in my family. The damage she has done to her marriage and family is ever before us. If you are this type of person your actions are being compared to Chinese water torture. I have seen the harm this person has caused not only to her husband, and children, but since she claims to be a Christian to the witness of others. We need to search our hearts to be sure our actions are not destroying and seek GOD's wisdom for how to deal with people in our life like this.

17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. I need to be building others up and edifying them in what I say this verse is key to any kind of relationship.

The very first verse immediately caught my attention and caused me to pause and think: "Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring." There is such profound and practical truth within this verse yet I know I daily live for the next day. Rather than focusing upon that which God has given me to do now I worry about the future and what I will be doing later: will I get all of next week's work completed by the weekend? Will I be accepted to this or that graduate program? Will I have a job next year? Where will I live during this time in my life? While we need to make plans, we also need to be living with what God has for us to do now, where He has us. To sacrifice the here and now and the people around us for something that may never occur, something God already has planned (that our worrying won't help) is silly and shows a lack of trust in our sovereign God.

17 "As iron sharpens iron so one man sharpens another".
This verse is a summary of all the previous verses about friends and their loving rebuke. We sharpen each other by giving advice, encouraging one another, and sometimes in giving rebuke.

I would like to thank all of you for the comments you have posted. I have learned so much in this short time, new things were revealed to me. I appreciate all the thoughts and insights I have gained from reading your comments.

May God continue to bless you as you grow in his word.

20 Death and Destruction [a] are never satisfied,
and neither are the eyes of man.

Solomon must have had a good understanding of the "eyes of man". As a king who had everything a man would desire, from wealth, to wisdom, to women,he understood that the lust of the eyes of man are never satisfied. This applies to all people, but especially us as Americans who are very materialistic.

This should be the "matto" i guess you could say to any relationship. We need to be building eachother up and encourage one another in our spiritual journeys.

Verses 5, 6, and 17 are all pictures of what a true friend is and does. Although it is difficult to take rebuke it is important that friends keep each other accountable and truthfully tell each other when they need to be told. While it hurts that is when you know your friend is true, they tell you what you NEED to hear instead of what you want to hear. Iron does sharpen Iron. Thats the kind of friend we need to spend time with, a friend that sharpens us and that we can help sharpen.

12 The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.
As believers and people seeking to gain wisdom we should flee from temptations of sin when we know that they are present. We may sit at that time thinking of what is the right thing to do in a moment and sometimes even continue on and end up suffering the consequences when they could have been avoided.
17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another
We should be looking to surround ourselves with other believers that are looking to push us to strive for the goal of living for Christ. Friends that will not hesitate to get in your face when your wrong but doing so in love and because they care. Friends that won't judge you or cut you off but that will do whatever it takes to push you to be Christlike and that you can do the same for.

Iron sharpens iron so one man sharpens another. I find this to be so true in so many ways in my life. God has blessed me with so many people in my life who have been used by Him to sharpen me in many ways. The funny thing is this is done in so many ways. Sometimes it is a swift kick in the rear from a good friend and other times it is a loving response from someone that I barely know. This is a good representation of the body of Christ and how it SHOULD work!
